Shoulder Pain
Shoulder pain affects many adults, and can have a number of causes. These causes may be as simple as a strain or sprain, bad posture or tension, while others may be due to a more serious condition. Understanding the source of the shoulder pain can make it easier to begin to get effective treatments in order to live without discomfort.
Many treatments involve allowing the area to rest but still giving it some movement. Examples of this include basic gentle exercise but avoiding more strenuous activities such as lifting objects or playing sports. This is often recommended when the pain is due to an injury.
Ice packs and heat may be recommended in order to reduce the inflammation and make the shoulder more comfortable. This is often used in conjunction with anti-inflammatory medication as it can help to further reduce the swelling. Prescription strength medicines may be prescribed by a physician in more serious cases of pain.
Many choose to treat their condition at home without the help of a physician. However, it is important to call a doctor if the pain worsens, or there is loss of use of the arm or shoulder. Discoloration, more serious swelling or signs of an infection may also require the help of a doctor. It is important to monitor the healing process in order to prevent possible complications.
Rotator cuff injuries are often more painful, and the pain spreads through the front side of the shoulder. This can limit movement and make it difficult to sleep. Physical therapy and medication is often the best course of action for treating this type of injury. Failure to treat it properly and quickly can result in loss of use of the arm or pain and irritation further down the arm or back. In some cases, movement can be restricted heavily.
